In short:

  1. Alsace has around 2,500 km of cycle routes, one of the densest networks in France.
  2. The Vineyard cycle route links Marlenheim to Thann over more than 100 km of wine villages.
  3. The Bruche canal path offers around 20 perfectly flat kilometres from Strasbourg.
  4. Strong riders target the Route des Crêtes and the Grand Ballon, highest point of the Vosges at 1,424 m.

Why Alsace is cycling country

Alsace ranks among the best-equipped French regions for cycling. The most famous of all Alsace cycling routes follows the Wine Route at the foot of the Vosges.

The region combines three very different terrains: the Rhine plain, perfectly flat, the rolling wine-growing foothills, and the Vosges mountains, which offer real climbs.

The Vineyard cycle route is well suited to a first 2 or 3 day trip following a bikepacking guide, staying with local winemakers.

The Vosges, a climbers’ playground

The Ballon d’Alsace, at 1,178 m, made history in 1905 as the first major climb of the Tour de France. The Grand Ballon, Markstein and Petit Ballon complete an ideal training ground.

Lower than the Alpine climbs by bike, these ascents offer steady 6 to 8% gradients over 8 to 15 km. The forest tracks of the Vosges are also perfect for a gravel bike.

Frequently asked questions

What are the best cycling routes in Alsace?

The four flagship cycling routes in Alsace are the Vineyard cycle route, which crosses more than 100 km of wine villages between Marlenheim and Thann, the Bruche canal path, around 20 km of flat riding from Strasbourg, EuroVelo 15 along the Rhine, and the Route des Crêtes in the Vosges, with the Grand Ballon at 1,424 m for stronger riders. The region has around 2,500 km of cycle routes.

When is the best time to cycle in Alsace?

From May to October. September and October are especially pleasant during the grape harvest, with mild temperatures and fewer visitors than in summer. The Route des Crêtes can be closed or snowbound in winter.

Can families ride the Alsace Vineyard cycle route?

Yes, on sections of 20 to 40 km. The route is rolling and alternates quiet roads and cycle paths. An e-bike makes the climbs between villages easier.
