In short:

  1. A women’s road bike no longer requires specific geometry: most brands offer unisex frames available from size 2XS (around 1.50 m or 4 ft 11 in).
  2. Contact points make the difference: 36 to 40 cm handlebars, 165 to 170 mm cranks, reach-adjustable levers.
  3. A saddle matched to sit bone width (often 143 to 155 mm) prevents most saddle pain.
  4. The budget is the same as for any road bike, from 800 euros in aluminium to more than 2,000 euros in carbon.

Women-specific geometry or unisex frame?

For a long time, the women’s road bike relied on dedicated geometry, with a shorter and taller frame. That approach is fading: body measurement studies run by manufacturers show that proportions differ more between individuals than between sexes.

The deciding factor is now the stack and reach pair. Stack measures the frame’s height, reach its length. Two frames with the same nominal size can differ by 2 to 3 cm in reach.

To compare geometries, the bike size chart guide explains which measurements to take.

Contact points to adapt

These parts are easy to swap, often at no extra cost when buying from a dealer. Bikes sold online are increasingly delivered with size-specific components.

Which type of road bike to favour?

Choosing between aero, endurance and climbing follows the same rules as for any road bike. For a first sportive, the endurance bike remains the most versatile.

Riders aiming for a goal such as a sportive training plan will benefit from pairing the purchase with a professional bike fit, which costs between 150 and 300 euros in France.

Frequently asked questions

Which road bike should a woman choose?

A women’s road bike is chosen first on frame size and geometry (stack and reach), then on contact points: 36 to 40 cm handlebars, 165 to 170 mm cranks and a saddle matched to sit bone width. Most major brands now offer unisex frames starting from size 2XS, fitted with size-specific components.

Do women need a women-specific bike?

Not necessarily. Several major brands such as Specialized have dropped women-specific geometry in favour of unisex frames, after finding that body proportions vary more between individuals than between men and women. Contact points still need to be adapted.

What frame size for a 1.60 m (5 ft 3 in) rider?

A 1.60 m rider usually fits an XS or 2XS frame, around 47 to 50 cm depending on the brand. Inseam and the frame’s reach help refine the choice.
